TO KNOW ONESELF: THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS FREEDOM
The journey to inner freedom begins with introspection – turning our gaze inward to truly understand ourselves. This self-awareness is the key to identifying areas within that hold us back, both spiritually and in everyday life. Asking ourselves powerful questions: what truly motivates me? What are my deepest desires? What core beliefs guide me? Understanding our "why" helps us define our "where to" and sets us on a path of authentic living. Our past experiences are valuable teachers. By reflecting on them, we gain valuable insights into who we are and where we want to go. This growth fosters a life aligned with our true values, allowing us to achieve meaningful goals.
We all have a deep desire to let our inner light shine brightly – to love more fully, express our talents with confidence, and overcome our limitations. This need for inner transformation is a beautiful call to action. Just like a precious work of art, our hearts need a constant source of light to reveal their true beauty. This light comes from a powerful combination – God's support and our own unwavering determination. Together, they fuel our ongoing journey of self-discovery, allowing us to unveil the treasures within. God's presence has always been a constant source of love and encouragement for humanity. Throughout history, there has been a divine desire to see us flourish in love and express all the potential within us.
The powerful words of the Second Vatican Council tell us, "Whoever follows Christ, a perfect man, also becomes more of a man" (Gaudium et Spes 41). This profound statement captures a core truth for Christians: Jesus is the ultimate role model, the perfect human we strive to become on our spiritual journeys. For believers, Jesus is the compass guiding our growth in faith and as individuals. After all, a "saint" isn't just someone spiritually developed, but also someone who finds human fulfillment even in challenges. They become fully human, mature in every way. In this journey of growth, Jesus is the cornerstone for those who follow him. Maturity in faith isn't achieved overnight. It's a continuous process of learning and discernment, walking alongside Jesus. Only with open hearts and God's grace can we truly grow spiritually – moving away from self-centeredness and embracing true maturity. This journey of internal growth is an exciting one, fueled by commitment and enthusiasm. Knowing ourselves fully is the foundation. It unlocks the path to inner freedom, allowing us to become the best versions of ourselves.
WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK
We are and we become what we think! Our perceptions of the world around us actively shape both our character and our actions. Therefore, it is imperative to cultivate a mindset imbued with positivity and optimism. One powerful instrument in achieving this objective is the "Prayer of the heart," a practice deeply rooted in Western Christian traditions. This practice involves the silent invocation of the name of Jesus synchronized with respiration, allowing this simple act to gradually revitalize the human spirit. This form of prayer does not necessitate intricate formulations, but rather seeks to establish a tranquil rhythm of faith within the individual. By fostering a foundation of healthy and confident thinking, the prayer of the heart serves as a guiding light on the path of life.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2668) emphasizes the simplicity and efficacy of continuous prayer through the invocation of the Holy Name of Jesus. This practice, characterized by the humble and attentive repetition of the sacred name, prioritizes essence over extensive discourse. It safeguards the centrality of the Word – divine love – and fosters its continual fruitfulness through perseverance. The Catechism further highlights the unique accessibility of this prayer form. Unlike other devotional practices, it is not confined to specific times or settings. Rather, it can be seamlessly integrated into the fabric of daily life, becoming a constant undercurrent of love for God. This transformative power elevates all actions, transfiguring them into a continuous prayer offered to Christ Jesus.
Faith serves as a potent catalyst for fostering positive thought patterns. By consistently internalising the Gospel's messages and truths, we cultivate an internal dialogue that reflects and amplifies our inherent beauty. As beings created in the image of God, we possess inherent magnificence and boundless potential. Rediscovering this profound truth is an ongoing and enriching endeavor. While past experiences may have led us down undesirable paths or influenced unconscious choices, these very experiences can become springboards for further development. Saint Paul, in his epistle to the Philippians (Philippians 3:13), encourages us to relinquish the past and strive toward a future brimming with blessings and genuine happiness. Inner freedom manifests in the act of uncovering and revealing the immense light that resides within each of us.
Numerous authorities within the discipline of ancient monasticism advocate for a specific method of introspection. This method entails acknowledging an intrusive thought, then meticulously analyzing it to glean any underlying truths about oneself. By engaging in this process of self-examination, individuals are empowered to discover and express their unique qualities and inherent value. The cultivation of positive thought patterns is paramount in this endeavour. Such a mindset fosters the appreciation of the precious internal strengths we possess, allowing the inherent treasures within us to radiate and illuminate our true essence.
Open and honest dialogue with those who hold us in affection contributes to our well-being. Through such interactions, they may possess a keener perception of our inherent beauty and latent talents than we ourselves currently recognise. This underscores the profound truth that we are not isolated beings, but rather navigate life's journey accompanied by a cherished support system – a testament to God's boundless generosity. The unwavering presence and affection of loved ones serves as a constant affirmation of our unique identity and inherent value. Their unwavering belief reflects the enduring and regenerative love of the Lord, a divine force that perpetually guides and sustains us.
CHERISHING OUR INHERENT WORTH
The cultivation of self-awareness and the cherishing of our inherent value as God's children is of paramount importance. While introspection may appear self-absorbed, it serves the very opposite purpose. Within our hearts lie precious treasures awaiting protection and expression in their full glory. Even Jesus, in the midst of his tireless ministry, recognised the significance of respite. As recounted in Mark 6:31, he famously instructed his disciples, 'Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.' Carving out space and time for such renewal – through prayer, meditation, or simply a moment of quietude – is essential. This practice fosters our ability to be present in the here-and-now, unburdened by the weight of the past or anxieties concerning the future. This aligns with Jesus' teachings in Matthew 6:34, where he reminds us: 'Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.'
As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 5:14, "You are the light of the world." By aligning ourselves with his divine light, we become beacons that illuminate the way for others. This sacred calling necessitates strength and focus. Through self-care and healthy boundaries, we nurture the gifts God has entrusted to us, transforming ourselves into vessels of his radiant love.
Life's experiences can leave us marked by emotional pain, shaping our perceptions. Yet, even in the midst of these scars, Jesus patiently waits at the threshold of our hearts, as described in Revelation 3:20. He longs to enter and fill the voids with his healing love. He will mend every internal wound, replacing them with the radiance of his love that brings wholeness and salvation.
Following Jesus's example of healing and good works (Acts 10:38), the Lord doesn't just touch our suffering; He delves deep, embracing our wounds and inviting us to find refuge in Him. This transformative healing stems from a profound union of love. By opening our hearts to Him, we weave a vibrant tapestry of love, gratitude, joy, and passion - a welcoming invitation for Him to dwell within us. This sacred union transforms us. Our entire being becomes the Kingdom of God, our heart His throne of glory. As the Psalmist reminds us, "Lord, you search me and know me, you see my sitting and my rising, you understand my thoughts afar off. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways" (Psalm 139:1-3). The Lord knows all of us, and in that knowledge lies His boundless love and healing grace.
Only He can truly know the soul, and only He can mend its wounds.
HARMONIOUS RELATIONSHIPS
Let's start with a powerful scene from the Gospel (Mark 1:27-28). Jesus has just spoken and acted with incredible authority, leaving everyone stunned. They ask, "What kind of teaching is this? He speaks with such authority! Even evil spirits obey him!" This passage highlights a key difference between Jesus and the religious leaders of his time. Jesus' teachings weren't just words; they were backed by his actions. He lived what he preached. So, how can we apply this in our own lives? How can we create harmony in our relationships and emotions? The answer lies in a deep connection with Jesus. His consistent way of living inspires us to strive for the same. It pushes us to be united with him and adopt his trustworthy way of acting. This means constantly striving to be our best selves. It means showing the world the "precious pearls" of our personality – our unique strengths and qualities. Ultimately, our goal in relationships should be to grow together in a deep and consistent way.
Building trust in relationships involves transparency. As the Gospel of Luke (8:16) states, 'No one lights a lamp and covers it with a vessel or places it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.' Being authentic allows us to clearly communicate our identity and desires. This fosters honesty both internally and in interactions with others. This transparency builds trust, which can lead to peaceful and empathetic environments that contribute to overall well-being. Through authenticity, individuals can cultivate more genuine and enduring friendships.
Effective communication is essential for nurturing healthy relationships. Assertive and clear communication is particularly helpful. The Gospel of Matthew (5:37) offers similar advice through Jesus' words: 'Let your 'yes' be 'yes,' and your 'no' be 'no.'' Authenticity involves clear, direct, and straightforward communication. This allows others to readily understand our positions and level of maturity. Hospitality, the ability to create a welcoming space for others, is valuable in relationships. People feel understood and comfortable in such an environment. The Virgin Mary's actions at the wedding at Cana (John 2) serve as an example. She recognized the needs of the couple and helped them find a solution by suggesting they turn to her Son. Attentiveness and availability are crucial for fostering peaceful relationships. An empathetic approach and demonstrably good actions contribute significantly. As 1 John 3:18 states, 'We do not love with words or speech, but with actions and in truth.'
It's important to acknowledge that even in our relationships, we can benefit from positive forms of guidance. James 3:17 describes wisdom as being 'pure, peace-loving, gentle, amenable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, without hypocrisy.' Cultivating these qualities can contribute to positive and balanced interactions with others.
Inner harmony fosters harmonious relationships.
FREE AND HAPPY
Inner freedom! We have reached our journey's milestone. Through this journey, we cultivated the ability to embrace daily experiences. This ongoing process of renewal allows us to constantly learn and grow, as each experience offers us valuable insights. The potential for renewal is ever-present – there's always something new to discover! The Gospel of Luke (5:36-39) offers an analogy with Jesus' words: 'No one tears a patch from a new garment to put it on an old one. Otherwise, he will have torn the new, and the patch from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the skins and is spilled, and the skins are destroyed. But new wine must be put into new wineskins. And no one who has drunk old wine desires the new, for he says, 'The old is good.'' This passage emphasises the importance of being open to change and growth.
Meditation empowers us by allowing dedicated time and space for inner reflection, silence, and our dialogue with God. Our power lies in the silence. This practice cultivates a sense of inner peace and opens us to a more contemplative way of being and to the experiential knowledge of the wondrous flowing of the love and beauty of the Triune God within us. We reach the heart of our Christian faith: perfect communion, the dance of love in our personal relationship with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit: we open to our specific "configuration" to Christ and to the harmonious flow of the Spirit. It is a complete paradigm shift in the way we relate to God.
We move beyond the concept of a distant, separate and impersonal God. Instead, we can enter into a cooperative relationship with a dynamic and ever-present God that guides and inspires us, revealing the interconnectedness of all things within a larger plan. Through experience, we discover that the external world reflects our internal state, that the world is a mirror. This journey of self-discovery moves us from intellectual understanding to a deeper, more personal and heart-felt experience. This experience cultivates a sense of love, both for ourselves and others. It's a unifying force that connects us all. We are Catholic, we are universal, we are ONE. By embracing this flow of love, we can strive for a sense of unity and universality. The Gospel of Matthew (16:1-3) offers a similar message. Jesus criticises those who seek external signs of divinity, urging them to be more discerning about the signs already present in everyday life. By staying open to new experiences and perspectives, we can continuously learn and grow.
Freedom leads us to gratitude. Yes, we are grateful to God for the great gifts received, above all for His dwelling in us, because He has made our hearts the throne of his glory, leading us to the remarkable harmony between body and spirit: the whole our being is His abode. With the Virgin Mary we sing: «My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God, my saviour because he looked at the humility of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed.
The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name" (Lk 1, 46-49).
Our heart has now become like that of the little ones, and it will have to remain so in order to have the necessary humility to welcome the new life that God is ready to give us. The hearts of little ones are always able to open and welcome the presence of the Lord and all of His gifts. The hearts of the little ones are the throne of His glory. In fact, «children were brought to him so that he could lay his hands on them and pray; but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said: «Leave them, do not prevent the children from coming to me; in fact, the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are like them." And after having laid his hands on them, he went away from there (Mt 19,13-15). With inner freedom, we are able to consider every brother and sister as a gift of God. With Francis of Assisi we will be able to rejoice by saying: «the Lord gave me brothers (Testament of Saint Francis. Franciscan Sources 116).
In John 8:31, Jesus declares, "The truth will set you free." He guides us, indeed, "through truth and life" (John 14:6). This purpose resonates deeply within us, special individuals who feel the Lord's constant, life-giving presence throughout our being. We are called to freedom, to live freely. "Let us be led" - these were the very words St. Maximilian Kolbe lived by!
Our journey ends here, however this isn't the end, it's a new beginning! A fresh start where everything holds meaning and everything is imbued with purpose. We emerge stronger, brimming with the energy of newfound freedom. We are free to soar, to express ourselves authentically, to connect with others, and to embrace life in all its richness. This journey that led us to inner freedom will forever be etched in our hearts.
This program incorporates the option for personalised sessions to optimally guide your journey towards inner freedom. These sessions will solidify the results achieved throughout the six stages. This opportunity will be assessed upon completion of the program.
